President's Message In a few days Christmas will be here once more. It is a source of real gratification to me to witness the friendly spirit which exists so abundantly in our plants in Rocky Mount and Wilson. I am sure this friendly spirit will con tinue and all will reap its bene fits. May I take this opportunity of wishing you all, as well as your families, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. H. H. Schell, President KEET>IcNG CHRISTgMAS /Si, It is a good thing to observe Christmas day. The mere marking of times and seasons, when men agree to stop work and make mer ry together, is a wise and whole some custom. It helps one to feel the supremacy of the common life over the individual life. It reminds a man to set his own lit tle watch, now and then, by the great clock of humanity which runs on sun time. But there is a better thing than the observance of Christmas day, and that is, keeping Christmas. Are you willing to forget what you have done for other people, and to remember what other peo ple have done for you; to ignore what the world owes you, and to think what you owe the world; to put your rights in the back- (Continued on ground, and your duties in the middle distance, and your chances to do a little more than your duty in the foreground; to see that your fellowmen are just as real as you are, and try to look be hind their faces to their hearts, hungry for joy; to own that prob ably the only reason for your ex- istince is not what you are going to get out of life, but what you are going to give to life; to close your book of complaints against the management of the universe, and look around you for a place where you can sow a few seeds of happiness—are you willing to do these things even for a day? Then you can keep Christmas. This plan was hand led through The Planters National Bank and Trust Co., in Rocky Mount and The National Bank of Wilson. The plan was made available for the employees as an easy way to save for Christmas, and as an encouragement to them to fol low a plan of saving their money. The savings plan is optional and the amount designated by the employee was deducted weekly from the employee’s check by the payroll department as a service to the employees. The money was then deposited at the bank according to the rules of the Christmas Savings Plan of that bank. This was the first time that a Christmas Savings Plan has been offered to the Caromount and Wil son Divisions by the company; and it is thought that it was very well received. At the Caromount Division 292 employees were is sued Christmas Savings Club checks which totaled $20,941.50.^ The Wilson Division had 24 em ployees participating in the Christ mas Savings Club. The total o£ these checks was $1529.25. The Christmas Savings checks were welcomed by employees as they did their Christmas shopping. The deductions were small enough not to be burdensome and the total amounts in the checks were large enough to be quite helpful. Application cards have been dis tributed to the foremen and they will be glad to assist all employees in enrolling in the Christmas Sav ings Club for 1948. (See Picture—Page Three) Pay Increase Announced During the first week of Jan uary there will be a general wage increase of aproximately 10% for employees of the Caromount and Wilson Divisions. This increase is in line with the policy of the company to pay the highest wages in its industry in the area where it operates.
